Beauty : who tells you??

Where do YOU get your views of beauty from?

Who tells YOU what is beautiful?

Who tells YOU what 'in proportion means'?

Who tells YOU what 'ugly' means?

Do you see the world though your eyes, or from someone else’s?

Has someone taught you how to look through your own eyes?

Have your views been constructed from the outside, or the inside?

How do you know your views are your own and not societies?

How do you determine what YOU really think and feel, and what society teaches you to think and feel? ... as a child, growing up - we are all unconsciously constructed...

How do you determine that your views are yours and not 'theirs'?

How you know that your views on beauty are not the unconscious, subliminal message all your life, but that they are you own?

How did you form your idea of beauty?

What is beauty?

We all say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but yet we seem to talk about and strive to reflect that same 'ideal standard' of beauty.

Everywhere, really. I think lots of people and things are beautiful for a variety of reasons.

Who tells YOU what is beautiful?

internal forces and the world at large.

Who tells YOU what 'in proportion means'?

Medical science more than magazines.

Who tells YOU what 'ugly' means?

My own particular tastes and attractions

Do you see the world though your eyes, or from someone else’s?

Both i would imagine, as we all do.

Has someone taught you how to look through your own eyes?

I don't think such things can be taught.

Have your views been constructed from the outside, or the inside?

A little of both, I would imagine.

How do you know your views are your own and not societies?

Because I dont agree with society on much as a general rule.

How do you determine what YOU really think and feel, and what society teaches you to think and feel? ... as a child, growing up - we are all unconsciously constructed...

Yes, but we do grow up and expierence the world, I know what is really mine because it feels DIFFERENT that something of someone elses that i am only borrowing for awhile.

How do you determine that your views are yours and not 'theirs'?

like i said, they feel different.

How you know that your views on beauty are not the unconscious, subliminal message all your life, but that they are you own?

Because in a lot of ways, I don't go for what would be considered conventional, ideal, media beauty. I prefer people who are often considered unusual, or not media perfect beautiful.

How did you form your idea of beauty?

Through life and living, I suppose.

What is beauty?

It's a different thing for each person, something that strikes them in an odd way. They see, they like.

Do we? Do I want to look like a supermodel? No. Do you want to look like a stripper? I doubt it. Does my Korean neighbor want to be white? No. There is variety...and people usually figure out in one way or another what they want, what the desire for themselves and in a partner, and often, it is a large range...

I agree, but...there is, without doubt an 'ideal standard' so to speak - which of course varies within itself; . Its in the movies, in porn, on TV, in magazines, in music clips, in dieting mags, in clothing shops, makeup shops, hairdressing shops, mens mags, womens mags, Hollywood, at the beaches, in the clubs, even the newspaper and advertisements : its being sold and its being bought, by consumers. Its about being slim; its about having smooth/unblemished skin; its about having silky hair; its about having big/er/perky breasts; its definately not about having any form of blemish, spot, cellulite or scar. I'm not saying that there is 'one mould' - like a Korean women wanting to be white; I'm saying we are fed, and we too perpetuate certain ideals of beauty, and we are consuming it. So thats the question : which parts do you make your mind up for, and which are influenced?

For example, I would never get my breasts 'tampered with' because I won't be fed; I won't get caught in consumerism as I believe many women are. On the other hand, I do like to be slim. I could say that it is because it is something I want : but if I took a moment, I could see beyond that, and realise that it is likely that what I want is influenced by our society today - if I lived in the Renaissance I'd likely think otherwise. All in all, I need to chose what I believe because I got there on my own, or I was influenced, and if influenced do I care or not?

Just a bunch of questions to get the mind thinking!

Acumen:

Oh, i definately believe it is a combination of the internal and the external. Fake boobs? Got 'em, but I actually really have an affection for scars...I'd never have any of mine cosmetically fixed, and I find them interesting on other people...they tell a story, lifes experiences, nothing to be ashamed of, you know? I think most people follow societies leads in some ways, almost fanatically, then they branch out, find their own ideals...sure, society is still there, but it becomes blended with ones own ideals...and I think the older we get, the more this happens.
